Terminalia arjuna bark is one of the key botanical ingredient used in the ayurvedic system of medicine. It has proven to be highly beneficial in the treatment of cardio-vascular disorders. Extracts of Terminalia arjuna bark is being used in several ayurvedic formulations as single ingredient or in combination with other herbs. Terminalia arjuna is known to contain several oleane derivatives out of which arjunolic acid is one of the key ingredient and used as an analytical marker for the standardisation of arjuna bark containing preparations. The evaluation of the stability of the sample is done by stability indicating assay. In the current study we have used arjunolic acid as a validated stability indicating assay for the determination of shelf life in arjuna caplets. We developed a stability indicating assay for Terminalia arjuna. Here we used HPTLC and HPLC methods to evaluate the stability of Terminalia arjuna. The HPTLC fingerprint serves as a reference to evaluate the authenticity of the herb used. The validation of the assay was found to be accurate (0.73 to 1.87 %RSD), precise (0.58 to 0.80 %RSD) and linear (R2 - 0.9999). The results were found to be accurate and reproducible. The arjuna caplets were found to be stable in accelerated conditions for 6 months.
